What is Dichroic Glass?Dichroic [di-crow-ick] (Dichro, Dicro) coated glass is a high tech by-product of the space and optics industry. It was originally created to pass certain wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum (such as visible light) and reflect others (such as heat). The specially formulated dichroic coatings on the glass we use filters one color and reflects another, and has the amazing ability to look like more then one color depending on angle of view. For example, our source of this glass, CBS Dichroic has a coating they refer to as "Cyan/Copper" which reflects a beautiful metallic copper/gold color, but looks bluish (cyan) when looking through it. When fused against a black or dark base tile the colors are intensified and sparkle like diamond. There are "textured" glasses coated with
dichroic in various patterns. Due to the "3d" nature of textured glass, the
dichroic coatings reflect and transmit their colors
to create yet more colors. And when fused, the
resulting colors sparkle with a depth that is visually
fascinating to explore. The "fossil" looking design seen
here is made from such a glass. No photo can truly capture the dazzling effect of this glass. See our FAQ for more information about this amazing glass. |
